Driving in New York City:
Driving in the City is not as bad as reported, but there are a number of important things to remember:
- EVERY intersection with a traffic light is “NO TURN ON RED” – but there are no signs at the intersections, just one as you cross the city line – easy to miss – and if you make a turn on red you may get an expensive ticket.
- Pedestrians tend to ignore lights, don’t walk signs, etc.
- If you are making a turn pedestrians have the right of way.
- Watch out for bicycles!
- Meter rules often apply 6 days a week – 8AM to 10PM in most cases. Special plates and permits are usually NOT exempt from this.
- Parking laws are STRICTLY enforced. Parking lots are expensive, about $40-50 a day in our immediate area. Parking tickets are wildly expensive, most starting at $100, and there are many tow away zones. Read parking signs carefully.
TIP: You won’t need a car to get around Manhattan. In fact, it is a detriment. Park your car in a garage and forget about it until you leave.
